Description

Discovered by Aisha Shahid and cataloged by Trail Dies, the 1994D-1DER-022 trail die reverse on the 1994 Denver Lincoln Memorial cent lacks the "WS" suffix found on most other 1994-D trail dies, distinguishing it within the series. This variety is recorded at Stage B, with the obverse at mid-die-state showing no noted markers. The reverse, also at mid-die-state, carries two sets of diagnostic features: a die gouge between the E of ONE and the C of CENT, and a series of small die gouges under the last A of AMERICA. The cluster of gouges beneath the final A provides a particularly distinctive attribution signature — multiple small gouges in close proximity create a pattern that is unlikely to be replicated on any other die, giving this variety a highly specific fingerprint. Trail die varieties without the wavy-step suffix may exhibit different manifestations of the trail die phenomenon, such as trail lines that appear in areas other than the Memorial steps or that present in forms other than the characteristic wavy undulation.

Die Markers

  • Stage “B“, obverse is MDS – none noted.
  • Reverse is MDS – a die gouge is seen between the E of ONE and the C of CENT. A series of small die gouges can be seen under the last A of AMERICA.
