1994-D Doubled Working Hub Reverse WWHR-001

Description

Unlike the more common working die doubled dies, the 1994-D 1¢ WWHR-001 is a doubled working hub reverse — a variety where the doubling occurred at the hub level rather than on an individual die. This distinction is significant: because a working hub is the master tool used to create multiple working dies, every die produced from this doubled hub carries the same doubling. Coins struck from different working dies may therefore exhibit identical hub doubling but different die markers, since each die develops its own unique scratches, gouges, and cracks during service. A notch shows on the upper letters of ONE CENT, and a very close spread towards the center is visible on the lower right Memorial and the upper right Memorial design. Notches can also be found on the bottom of some of the letters in STATES OF AMERICA. Because die markers will vary on each working die made from this hub, attribution of WWHR-001 relies on recognizing the consistent hub doubling pattern rather than matching a specific die's secondary characteristics.
