Description

Sole rim cud documented for the 1993 Philadelphia Washington Quarter, where a section of the die rim fractured under repeated striking stress, broke away, and left a void in the die that produced a raised featureless mass on subsequently struck coins. Rim cuds are classified as major die breaks because the separated die fragment exits the press entirely, unlike retained cuds where the broken piece stays partially attached. Philadelphia's 1993 quarter production ran to approximately 639 million pieces, subjecting each die pair to millions of high-pressure strikes during its service life. The rim zone concentrates stress because the die's collar, planchet edge, and striking force all converge at the periphery, making it the most common site for major fractures.
