1993D-1DER-028WS Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Wayne Perry found the 028WS and its most distinctive obverse marker: a small die gouge positioned "high in the field over the 3 digit of the date." The phrase "high in the field" places this gouge in the open, featureless expanse of the obverse between Lincoln's portrait and the rim — a no-man's land on the die face where there are no design elements to serve as nearby reference points. Floating in open field, unanchored to any letter or design feature except the distant 3 of the date below it, this gouge is the kind of marker that searchers either spot immediately or miss entirely, depending on their lighting angle and magnification. On the reverse, a die chip appears in column 2, a common but still useful attribution point. The trail die characteristics carry the WS suffix, confirming the presence of both fluting and step deviation on the Memorial's stepped base. At Stage B mid-die-state, neither surface shows advanced deterioration beyond these incidental markers. Perry's discovery brought the census to within two entries of its final count, as the 1993-D trail die hunt approached completion. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
