Description

Jean Lee's third contribution to the census employs a dual-coordinate spatial reference that is unusual even by the exacting standards of variety cataloging. The obverse die dot is described as "next to the back of Lincoln, across from the Y of LIBERTY" — a description that uses both the portrait and the legend simultaneously to fix the defect's position. Lincoln's back establishes the horizontal coordinate (the dot is in the field immediately behind the portrait), while the Y of LIBERTY establishes the vertical coordinate (the dot is at the same height as that specific letter). This two-axis system places the die dot within a remarkably small region of the obverse field, perhaps a square millimeter, without requiring measurement tools. The reverse carries no notable die markers, leaving the obverse die dot as the primary attribution feature beyond the trail die effect itself. The T suffix designates tilted trail lines, indicating that the die's lateral displacement generated directional streaks rather than the stepped distortion of WS varieties.
