1993D-1DER-019WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Jimmy Ehrhart's first contribution to the 1993-D census features a die crack extending from the bottom of the T in CENT all the way to the rim — a substantial fracture traversing a significant portion of the reverse die face. Cracks reaching the rim are noteworthy because they represent a complete propagation path from a design element to the die's edge, and they tend to widen with continued use as each successive strike hammers the fractured halves farther apart. On the struck coin, this crack appears as a fine raised line running from the base of the T to the coin's border. Additional reverse markers include a die gouge to the right of the T in CENT and another between the R and I of AMERICA. The obverse carries no noted markers. At Stage C late die state, the severity of the rim-reaching crack confirms this die was approaching the end of its service life. The WS suffix indicates both fluting and step deviation were present on the reverse. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
