Description

Right-side fluting under columns 11 and 12 gives the 011WS an uncommon spatial signature. Most trail die fluting in the Lincoln Memorial series concentrates under columns 2 and 3, the leftmost pair of the twelve-column facade, because that zone is particularly sensitive to lateral displacement. When fluting appears under columns 11 and 12 instead — the rightmost pair — it indicates the die's seating instability was oriented differently, shifting maximum displacement to the opposite end of the building. Combined with light step deviation under columns 7 and 8 at a 190-degree offset, the pattern suggests the die was rocking toward the right during its displacement episodes. On the obverse, a small die gouge sits next to the second 9 of the date, while the reverse carries a die gouge over the left edge of the stylobate — the stepped platform on which the Memorial's columns rest, and the architectural feature where lateral die displacement produces its most visible effects. Cataloged at Stage B mid-die-state. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
