RRDC-1c-1992-01R Cud
Error
Description
Sharing the same catalog number as the bisecting rim-to-rim die crack documented in RRDC-1c-1992-01R, this companion entry records the next chapter in the same die's failure narrative: after the bisecting crack split the reverse die from rim to rim, continued use caused a section of die steel along the crack to separate completely, producing a cud. This crack-to-cud progression is one of the most clearly documented examples of sequential die failure in the 1992 Lincoln cent catalog — two entries that together tell the story of a die's final hours of service. The cud formed because once a bisecting crack divides a die into two semi-independent sections, the unsupported edges along the crack flex under repeated striking pressure until material fatigue causes a fragment to detach. The resulting cud on struck coins appears as a raised, featureless area adjacent to or overlapping the raised line left by the original crack, and specimens that preserve both the crack and the cud on the same coin document both failure stages simultaneously. For die failure researchers, this paired entry demonstrates why the Cuds on Coins catalog cross-references crack and cud listings that share a common die — the two varieties are causally related chapters of a single mechanical story. Cataloged on November 11, 2017. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets, 2.5 grams, 19mm, plain edge.
