1992-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Submitted to the catalog by Leonard Matyjasik, WDDR-005 of the 1992-D Lincoln Memorial cent exhibits a distinctive form of reverse doubling: partial extra columns visible in the first, second, and third Memorial bays, with additional columnar ghosting appearing to the left of the Memorial building itself. The Lincoln Memorial's twelve columns and eleven bays between them provide a geometrically regular framework that makes even slight hub displacement visible — when the secondary hubbing impression shifts, the columns and their intervening spaces effectively function as a ruler, translating microscopic die-level displacement into visible doubled or ghost elements. On this variety, the partial extra columns in bays one through three suggest the secondary impression shifted enough to deposit faint column images in spaces that should contain only the recessed bay openings, while the extra columnar element to the left of the Memorial indicates the displacement extended beyond the building's footprint. No significant die markers were documented on either the obverse or reverse, meaning attribution relies primarily on the distinctive ghost-column pattern. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm.
