1990P-1DER-006T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Identified by Bill Slaughter of Arkansas, 1990P-1DER-006T on the 1990 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent features a 160-degree offset with trail lines visible from the southwest corners of the letter termini on N and T of CENT, faint trails on the FG designer's initials of Frank Gasparro, and a cross-over trail on the bottom of the E in CENT. The cross-over trail — where a trail line crosses from one design element onto another — provides distinctive attribution geometry because it establishes the exact angular relationship between the transferred obverse design and the native reverse lettering. Trails emanating from the FG initials are relatively uncommon among trail die varieties because these small letters occupy a recessed area of the Memorial design where contact transfer is less likely to produce visible impressions. No die markers were observed on the examined specimens, which may indicate the coins were struck at early die state before distinctive gouges, scratches, or cracks had developed on the die face. The absence of die markers does not diminish the variety's validity but does make attribution more reliant on the trail die features themselves. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm.
