Description

Displaying a 180-degree offset — meaning the obverse die impression transferred in a fully inverted orientation — 1990P-1DER-002WS on the 1990 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent shows moderate fluting extending into the stylobate under columns 2 and 3 of the Memorial, along with moderate step deviation at columns 5 through 8 with emphasis toward the left. The 180-degree offset is among the most common trail die orientations because it reflects the natural alignment when opposing dies make direct contact. Examined at Stage C late die state (LDS), this variety is identified by long die scratches extending from the B of LIBERTY over the full LIBERTY inscription and beneath the date. An additional heavy scratch runs from the E of ONE to the C of CENT. These extensive scratches suggest the die experienced significant surface damage during its production life, consistent with the late die state classification. The fluting into the stylobate — the flat band forming the base of the Memorial's columned facade — creates a subtle distortion in what should be a smooth, featureless surface, providing another diagnostic point for attribution. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets composed of 97.5% zinc and 2.5% copper, weighing 2.5 grams and measuring 19mm.
