1990-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
The year 1990 marked a watershed in United States coinage production: for the first time, mint marks were engraved directly onto the master die rather than hand-punched onto each individual working die. This procedural change, implemented across all denominations, permanently eliminated repunched mint mark varieties — but it had no effect on doubled die varieties, which arise from misalignment during the hubbing process that creates the working dies themselves. WDDR-001 on the 1990-D Lincoln Memorial cent is the first Wexler-cataloged doubled die reverse for the Denver Mint issue of this transitional year. The doubling affects the reverse design elements, where the Lincoln Memorial's intricate architectural detail — twelve columns, five bays, steps, inscriptions, and the seated Lincoln statue — provides an exceptionally sensitive canvas for detecting even subtle hub misalignment. Attribution relies on careful examination of the Memorial's fine elements under magnification, comparing the position and spread of doubled features against the Wexler reference images. As a Denver Mint product, this cent bears the D mint mark that was now applied at the master die stage, appearing in identical position on every 1990-D working die. Struck on a copper-plated zinc planchet (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm diameter.
