1989 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
Error
Description
Manifesting as a close spread towards rim, WDDR-001 creates notching — small shelf-like steps along the edges of affected design elements — on ONE CENT, the designer's initials FG, and the lower portion of AMERICA on the reverse of this 1989 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial cent. Close spread indicates the separation between primary and secondary hub impressions is narrow, producing doubling that is detectable as edge irregularities rather than as clearly split images. The notching effect appears when the secondary impression slightly extends the boundary of a letter or numeral, creating a tiny ledge visible under magnification along one side of the affected element. Obverse die markers include short vertical die gouges on the front of Lincoln's neck and above the bow tie — markers positioned in the portrait's most finely detailed area, where even small gouges stand out against the smooth die surface. Doubled die reverses on Lincoln Memorial cents are generally less publicized than their obverse counterparts but carry their own collecting significance, as the Memorial's architectural details and multiple text elements provide numerous reference points where doubling evidence can be detected and confirmed. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
