1989 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006
Error
Description
Characterized by extra thickness on STATES OF AMERICA and the designer's initials FG, WDDR-006 (Wexler variety ID 1989 1¢ WDDR-006) affects the upper-right legend in a broader pattern than the more narrowly focused close-spread varieties in the 1989 series. Notching appears on the lower portions of both A's in AMERICA and on the R, where the secondary hub impression extends the lower serifs and stroke terminals into small shelf-like steps visible under magnification. Die scratches radiate northeast from the letters LIBE in LIBERTY on the obverse, indicating directional surface contact during die preparation or service. A strong die scratch runs through the NE of ONE and the CE in CENT on the reverse, cutting diagonally across two separate legend elements and providing a bold linear marker for attribution. A gouge to the right of the last Memorial column further distinguishes this die. The northeast-trending scratch pattern on both obverse (from LIBE) and reverse (through ONE/CENT) suggests these surface marks may share a common origin from a single die maintenance event. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm. A small die gouge (dot) can be found to the right of the last Memorial column.
