Description

Primary repunched mintmark variety for the 1989-D Washington quarter, RPM-001 exhibits a D/D West configuration — the D mintmark was punched into the die at least twice, with the secondary impression displaced to the west of the primary position. This variety also carries the cross-reference FS-501, a Fivaz-Stanton designation from the "Cherrypicker's Guide to Rare Die Varieties" that provides mainstream recognition beyond specialist RPM catalogs. The FS-501 listing significantly elevates the variety's visibility and market demand, as Cherrypicker's Guide inclusion represents a de facto endorsement of collectibility. Washington quarters from the 1965-1998 clad era used individually hand-punched mintmarks on each working die until the Mint transitioned to master die mintmarks around 1990, making 1989 one of the last dates where repunched mintmarks could occur through the manual punching process. Denver struck approximately 896.5 million quarters in 1989, a substantial production run that generated numerous die pairs and provided the statistical base for RPM discoveries.
