Description

This replacement variety now occupies the WRPM-017 slot in the Wexler catalog for the 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent after the original WRPM-017 was determined to be a later die state of WRPM-004 rather than an independent variety. Such reclassifications are a routine part of maintaining accurate variety catalogs: as more specimens are examined and die markers are compared across listings, varieties initially thought to be distinct sometimes prove to be different stages of the same die's production life. When that occurs, the later-discovered die state is merged into the earlier listing, and the vacated catalog number is either retired or assigned to a genuine new variety — in this case, the latter approach was taken. No cross-references to other attribution catalogs are currently known for the replacement variety, and additional specimens are needed to fully characterize its repunching direction and supplementary die markers. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
