1988-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-015

Description

Documented by the Wexler team as WRPM-015 with a D/D Tilted orientation, this 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent RPM has been tracked across three die states — Stages A through C — with detailed obverse and reverse markers cataloged at each stage. The obverse die markers progress from a die gouge under the bust in Stage A to multiple gouges developing around TRUST, LIBERTY, and Lincoln's ear in later stages, illustrating the cumulative toll of sustained production use on the die surface. Reverse markers include die gouges around the R and A in AMERICA, a die scratch in bay 9 of the memorial, and gouges around the S in STATES and the F in the designer's initials FG. The three-stage documentation provides a useful die-life timeline for attribution: collectors can estimate where their specimen falls in the production sequence by comparing the extent of die deterioration against the published stage descriptions. No cross-references to CONECA or Coppercoins catalogs are currently known for this variety. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
