Description

Repunched mintmarks were an inherent byproduct of the U.S. Mint's manual die preparation process: because each working die received its mintmark through individual hand-punching, slight variations in placement were unavoidable, and corrections required a second (or third) strike of the punch that left telltale overlapping impressions.
