1988-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-007

Description

The Wexler team's WRPM-007 designation covers a 1988-D repunched mintmark documented across two die states with evolving marker profiles on both sides of the coin. In Stage A, the obverse exhibits die deterioration at the rim extending through IN GOD WE TRUST, while the reverse shows die scratches running through the letters NT in CENT. Stage B introduces additional obverse markers — a gouge to the left of the mintmark and gouges under the 88 in the date — along with a shifted reverse marker pattern featuring northwest-oriented scratches through the NE in ONE and heavy die gouges above the designer's initials FG. The transition from Stage A to Stage B demonstrates the progressive nature of die deterioration: the original rim deterioration continues while new damage points develop at different locations on the die face.
