Description

Among the most thoroughly documented repunched mintmarks in the entire 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent series, WRPM-004 exhibits a D/D Tilted orientation and has been tracked by the Wexler team across five distinct die states — Stages A through E — with separate obverse and reverse die marker inventories recorded for each stage. This exceptional level of documentation traces the die's complete service life from early die state through terminal deterioration, with a notable development at Stage E where a new reverse die was paired with the original obverse. The progression across five stages captures how both the repunching evidence and accompanying die markers evolve as the die endures millions of striking cycles: early-state coins show the crispest mintmark separation and sharpest die gouges, while later stages exhibit increasing wear, new cracks, and the accumulated damage of prolonged production use. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1988D-1MM-037, this variety also absorbed the original WRPM-017 designation after that listing was determined to be a later die state of this same die rather than an independent variety. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
