1988-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-003
Error
Description
Listed as WRPM-003 by the Wexler team, this 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent repunched mintmark presents an open question in the date's variety catalog. The variety displays separation on the upper serif and on the vertical bar of the mintmark that is similar to — but seemingly distinct from — WRPM-016, another variety in the same series. Whether these two listings represent different dies or different stages of the same die remains unresolved; Wexler has noted his interest in examining additional specimens to make a definitive comparison. This kind of ambiguity is not uncommon in RPM cataloging, where two varieties can share superficially similar repunching characteristics yet originate from entirely different working dies, distinguishable only through careful analysis of supplementary die markers elsewhere on the coin's surfaces. No cross-references to other catalogs are currently known for this variety. Until further specimens surface for comparative study, WRPM-003 and WRPM-016 remain listed as separate varieties. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.

- Discovered by Ken Chylinski Cross References: None known Comments: Similar to WRPM-016 but has seemingly different separation on the upper serif and separation on the vertical bar of the mint mark. I would like to see an example of this die to determine if they could be the same die or are definitively different.
