1988-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Designated WRPM-001 by the Wexler team, this 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent repunched mintmark carries an unusually rich set of die markers that make it one of the more readily attributable varieties in the date's RPM census. On the obverse, a die gouge runs west-southwest from the numeral 1, with additional gouges clustered around the date digits and another gouge positioned above chin level on Lincoln's portrait. The reverse die shows equally distinctive markers: a die gouge east of the M in UNUM, a gouge above the O in ONE, a die scratch below the N in ONE, and a die scratch north from the first T in STATES. This variety is cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #7 and Coppercoins 1988D-1MM-022, and was previously listed as WRPM-013 before that designation was replaced by the current listing. The abundance of supplementary die markers beyond the repunching itself gives collectors multiple reference points for confident attribution, even on specimens where the primary RPM evidence has been softened by die wear. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
