1988-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-009
Error
Description
VarietyVista's ninth repunched mintmark for the 1988-D Lincoln Memorial cent, RPM-009 displays a D/D West orientation — the secondary mintmark impression displaced westward from the primary punch. Assigned die markers UVC-1192 and DMR-010, this variety is documented across three die states: Stage A in early die state (confirmed), Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed early die state attribution is particularly valuable, as repunching evidence is sharpest before die wear begins to erode the subtle separation between overlapping mintmark impressions. Westward displacement ranks among the most common RPM directions observed on Denver-minted Lincoln cents, reflecting the natural tendency of lateral drift when the engraver repositioned the punch for a corrective strike. With nine documented RPMs, the 1988-D date stands as one of the most prolific repunched mintmark dates in the late Lincoln Memorial cent series — a distinction it shares with the final pre-hub years of 1988 and 1989. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
