CU-1C-1987-08 Cud
Error
Description
CU-1C-1987-08 is the eighth cud variety recorded by Cuds on Coins for the 1987 Lincoln Memorial cent, a date that has yielded one of the deeper cud censuses among modern cents. Collectors pursuing cud varieties often focus on building date-complete or denomination-complete sets, assembling representative examples from as many different die breaks as possible. The appeal of cud collecting lies partly in the treasure-hunt nature of the pursuit: because cuds form from unpredictable die failures and can appear on coins found in ordinary circulation, pocket change, or bank rolls, they offer the possibility of genuine discovery without requiring access to specialized dealer inventories. The 1987 Philadelphia production environment — operating multiple press lines simultaneously to produce billions of cents — meant that broken dies could generate significant quantities of cud coins before inspection caught the defect and pulled the die from service. Some cuds are known from just a handful of surviving examples while others exist in quantities of hundreds or thousands, depending entirely on how long the broken die operated and how many of the resulting coins were preserved rather than spent into circulation. Struck at Philadelphia on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm, from the 1987 mintage of 4,682,466,931 cents.
