1986-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-014

Description

With no known cross-references and a comparatively lower mint mark placement than WRPM-003, WRPM-014 on the 1986-D Lincoln Memorial cent is a Wexler-exclusive variety documented across two stages using different reverse dies. Stage A obverse markers include a short die scratch southwest from under Lincoln's chin and a small die gouge under the bowtie. By Stage B, the bowtie gouge persists while the chin scratch has disappeared, likely polished away during die maintenance. The reverse tells a more dramatic story: Stage A shows die gouges right of the lower last A in AMERICA and a gouge above the left memorial base, but Stage B introduces an entirely new reverse die — the original was retired and replaced during the die's service life. The new reverse carries distinct markers: heavy die flow lines inside and right of O in ONE, a small die gouge left of the upper F in FG, and a die scratch north-northeast inside lower bay 11. Struck at Denver on copper-plated zinc planchets at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
