1986-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-011

Description

Remarkable as a D/D/D triple repunch showing displacement both north and south, WRPM-011 on the 1986-D Lincoln Memorial cent is one of the scarcer RPM types — a die that received three separate mint mark punch impressions with secondary punches displaced in opposing vertical directions. Triple repunches are significantly rarer than standard double-punched varieties because they required the mint employee to misposition the punch twice. Cross-referenced to Coppercoins 1986D-1MM-020 and originally CONECA RPM #4 (delisted), the variety spans two stages. Stage A obverse markers include a die scratch from W in WE to under the first T in TRUST. Reverse Stage A shows a short north-south die scratch between N and T of CENT and heavy die flow lines on the upper left of M in AMERICA. By Stage B, these markers have weakened. The triple repunch makes WRPM-011 a priority target for variety collectors. Struck on copper-plated zinc planchets (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) at 2.5 grams and 19mm.
