The EMDS designation suggests the die had seen moderate use, enough to develop initial wear patterns but not yet showing the pronounced deterioration of later stages. Repunched mint marks on 1986-D Lincoln cents represent some of the final years of hand-punched mint marks in the Lincoln cent series: the Denver Mint applied individual D punch impressions to working dies, and corrections to misaligned initial punches created the doubled mint mark images that RPM collectors seek.
