RCD-25c-1985P-01 Retained Cud

Description

First cataloged retained cud for the 1985-P Washington Quarter, RCD-25c-1985P-01 documents an obverse variety where a die fragment at the rim cracked and separated but remained seated in its cavity, transferring a raised or softly struck zone onto the portrait side of every coin produced from that die. The absence of an "R" suffix places the retained cud on the obverse — the side bearing John Flanagan's Washington portrait — where rim-area anomalies directly affect the president's likeness or surrounding legends. Retained cuds on Washington Quarters are less commonly cataloged than Lincoln Cent counterparts, partly because the quarter's larger diameter and different striking dynamics produce a distinct fracture environment, and partly because fewer attributors have systematically surveyed quarter production for cud varieties. The 1985-P date falls in the copper-nickel clad era, well after the 1964 transition from 90% silver, during a period when Philadelphia produced hundreds of millions of quarters annually.
