Description

Cataloged as CU-25c-1985P-08, this cud error appears on the 1985 Philadelphia-struck Washington quarter, part of the Washington Clad and Silver Proof Quarters 1965-1998 series. A cud is a major die break at the rim where a piece of the die fractures and completely separates, leaving a raised featureless blob of unstruck metal at the edge of the coin corresponding to where the missing die fragment would have imparted design detail. The copper-nickel clad quarter weighs 5.67 grams and measures 24.26 mm in diameter with a reeded edge (75% copper, 25% nickel bonded over a pure copper core). The Cuds on Coins reference project documented this variety, noting that no cross-references exist in other cataloging systems. The "08" in the designation indicates this is the eighth documented reverse cud for the 1985-P Washington quarter, demonstrating that even in years without special design programs, the standard Washington quarter reverse produced a notable number of cud varieties through normal die wear and failure. John Flanagan's heraldic eagle reverse, used on Washington quarters from 1932 through 1998, features the eagle with spread wings, an olive branch, and arrows, a design derived from the Great Seal of the United States. Cuds on Washington quarters from the 1965-1998 clad era are collected both as individual die varieties and as part of the broader cud collecting specialty that spans all denominations and dates. The 1985 Philadelphia production year generated substantial quarter output to meet commerce needs, and the multiple die failures documented for this date reflect the heavy production demands placed on individual dies.
