Description

The first cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1984-D Kennedy Half Dollar, RPM-001 shows a D/D repunching to the northeast — the secondary impression visible as a faint shadow northeast of the primary strike. This variety can be found in United States Mint uncirculated sets from 1984, where Denver coins were packaged alongside Philadelphia issues for collector distribution. Repunched mintmarks were a natural byproduct of the hand-punching process used to apply mint letters to working dies before the Mint transitioned to master die mintmarks around 1990. Each die destined for Denver received its D from a small steel punch driven into the die face, and any repositioning between hammer blows left overlapping impressions. By 1984, Kennedy Half Dollars had been struck in copper-nickel clad composition for over a decade, with Denver contributing its share of the modest half dollar mintages that characterized the 1980s — a period when the denomination saw limited everyday circulation. The northeast repunching provides a clear diagnostic under moderate magnification, distinguishing RPM-001 from other mintmark varieties on the 1984-D half dollar.
