CU-25c-1984P-01R Rim Cud
Error
Description
Documented by Cuds on Coins with no known cross-reference numbers, CU-25c-1984P-01R is a reverse rim cud discovered on the 1984 Philadelphia Washington Quarter. The "R" suffix in the catalog number indicates this cud is located on the reverse of the coin rather than the obverse, with the break affecting the die rim on the eagle side of John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design. Rim cuds on the reverse of Washington Quarters interact with the heraldic eagle design, the olive branch, the arrows, and the surrounding inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR depending on their precise clock position around the rim. The cud error occurs when a section of the die rim fractures and separates completely, leaving a void in the die that produces a corresponding raised, featureless blob of metal at the edge of every coin struck thereafter until the die is retired from service. The 1984 Washington Quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition — a pure copper core bonded between outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel — weighing 5.670 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm and a reeded edge. The Washington Quarter series, introduced in 1932 to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington's birth, used John Flanagan's bust portrait and heraldic eagle design continuously until the State Quarters program began in 1999. The 01 position designation indicates the first documented cud location on the 1984-P reverse, establishing the baseline catalog entry for rim breaks at this position on this date-mint combination.
