Description

Ninth documented atypical die clash for the 1984 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, this variety from the collection of Joe Koelling reveals that three separate clash events occurred despite the obverse initially appearing to show evidence of only two. Cataloged by MadDieClashes under designation ADC-1c-1984-09, an atypical die clash occurs when the obverse and reverse dies strike each other without a planchet between them, but with an abnormal alignment — tilted, rotated, or offset — transferring ghost-like impressions of each die's design onto the other. While normal die clashes produce predictable clash marks based on the standard die alignment, atypical clashes create unexpected design transfers because the dies met at an unusual angle.
