Description

Fourth documented rim cud for the 1984-P Jefferson Nickel, this variety records die rim failure during the early years of the P mintmark era on five-cent pieces. Philadelphia began adding the P mintmark to nickels in 1980 — the denomination's first use of a Philadelphia mint letter — ending a tradition where mintmark absence indicated Philadelphia production. A rim cud forms when a die edge section fractures and separates entirely, leaving a cavity that fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass at the coin's edge. The Jefferson Nickel, featuring Felix Schlag's portrait of Thomas Jefferson on the obverse and Monticello on the reverse, has been produced continuously since 1938 and remains actively collected for die varieties. Four cataloged rim cuds for the 1984-P date indicates multiple dies experienced rim fractures during Philadelphia's production run, each representing an independent failure on a separate working die. Philadelphia struck hundreds of millions of nickels in 1984, a volume requiring numerous die pairs pushed through extended service that made rim fractures a predictable consequence of high-output operations. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins.
