Description
The 1983 (S) Proof Olympic Dollar is a proof commemorative dollar struck at the San Francisco Mint. Total mintage reached 1.6 million. Authorized by Congress (Public Law 97-220) to raise funds for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, this silver dollar was the first of two dollar designs in the Olympic program. The obverse features a discus thrower with three shadow outlines showing motion, inspired by the ancient Greek sculptor Myron, while the reverse displays the head and shoulders of a bald eagle. Designed by Elizabeth Jones. Struck in 90% silver, 10% copper, weighing 26.73 grams, 38.1 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #9608. The 1983 Olympiad Dollar launched the modern era of Olympic commemorative coinage. Its classical discus thrower design pays homage to the ancient Greek origins of the Olympic Games.
