1983 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1983-06
Error
Description
ADC-1c-1983-06 At first glance this die clash event looks normal. However, a closer examination brought forth oddity inconsistent with the typical die clash seen during this era. This coin is in the collection of Bob Piazza. The image below shows a clash mark left by bay 9 on the reverse. Part of a clash mark is also see from bay 8 and 7. At the end of Lincoln’s chin, the clash mark left by bay 10 is barely visible. The disparity of between the strength of bay 9 clash to bay 10 clash indicates that there was an unusual circumstance involved. Recently, we attributed a similar die clash (ADC-1c-1982-02) similar appearing die clash marks. The image below shows a struck-through area (white arrow) above bay 3 clash mark. The area behind that line has a different surface texture. The bay 2 clash mark has an indent on the right side indicating the presence of extra metal being “pushed” up. These observations indicate that this die clash may have been through a foreign object. The reverse of this coin is just as strange as the obverse. The clash mark generated by the field and the back of Lincoln’s head is strong. However, in the bay 2 there is no indication of the Y from LIBERTY and due to the strength of the clash, there should be. The clash mark generated by the field and Lincoln’s lower jaw line is very strong in bay 8, but abruptly ends in that bay when it should be seen in bays 7 and 9. Also notice that the upper part of column 8 is noticeable thinner than column 7 and 9. The reverse of the coin also shows patches of different texture. The die crack from the right corner of the Memorial building roof to the rim will help identify this die clash event.
