1983 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1983-05

Description

Found by Jim Woloch and cataloged by MadDieClashes as ADC-1c-1983-05, this 1983 Lincoln Memorial Cent displays one set of strong clash marks across Lincoln's portrait from a die clash event where the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet between them. What makes this specimen notable is a strange sheen that separates the parts of the obverse struck around recessed die areas — the fields and memorial bays — from the raised design elements, a visual effect more pronounced than typical die-clashed coins. A strong die crack running across the head serves as the primary die marker. The 1983 date places this variety during a transitional period for the Lincoln Cent, as the copper-plated zinc composition introduced in late 1982 was now fully standard, and the softer zinc planchets interacted differently with die surfaces than the previous copper alloy. Atypical die clashes differ from standard clashes in their unusual characteristics — transferred design elements appearing in unexpected locations or displaying anomalous features that standard clash mechanics do not fully explain.
