Description

Twenty-second in the census and assigned to the Bronze Large Date subtype, CU-1C-1982-22 contributes to a cluster of bronze cud entries that document the die failure experience of Philadelphia's pre-transition production line. When the U.S. Mint decided in 1982 to replace the 95% copper cent with a copper-plated zinc alternative, the motivation was economic: rising copper prices had pushed the metal value of a cent uncomfortably close to its face value, and the lighter zinc core offered substantial savings per coin. But the transition also meant that Philadelphia's die shop had to calibrate equipment for two radically different planchet specifications — a logistical challenge that may have contributed to atypical die wear patterns during the changeover period. CU-1C-1982-22 predates that changeover, recording a rim failure under the established bronze production parameters. The Large Date punch style, with its wider numeral spacing, remained the default obverse configuration for early 1982 production.
