Description

Companion to the obverse trail die 1982P-1DEO-001T, this reverse trail die variety — cataloged as 1982P-1DER-001T — documents a different die pair where the sliding occurred on the reverse side of the 1982 Philadelphia Bronze Large Date cent. Moderate trail lines are visible from the tops of the letters in E PLURIBUS UNUM, with distortion evident on the horizontal bars of both Ts and the E of STATES. The offset direction is recorded at 010 degrees, providing a precise angular measurement of the die's sliding vector during the strike. Die markers at Stage "B" (mid die state) include: on the obverse, no significant markers noted; on the reverse, small die gouges in and around the word ONE and a die gouge under the U of UNITED. This die was discovered by Steven Bingham of Missouri. The bronze Large Date composition confirms pre-transition production from 95% copper planchets (3.1 grams) — the same subtype that hosts the obverse trail die variety, though the two were produced by entirely different die pairs. Trail die reverses are less commonly documented than their obverse counterparts, making 1982P-1DER-001T a noteworthy addition to the 1982 variety census. Attribution by Trail Dies.
