1982 Atypical Die Clash ADC-1C-1982-CU-02
Error
Description
Cataloged as ADC-1c-1982(LD-Cu)-02, this 1982 Philadelphia large date copper Lincoln Memorial Cent displays two clash events offset from one another, creating a layered pattern of transferred design elements. In the field left of Lincoln's hair, doubled memorial bay clash marks are visible, while marks from the memorial roof appear to the right of the face and above the date. Memorial bays can also slightly be seen below the chin. The reverse shows doubled clash marks as well, strongest on the left side, confirming that both dies experienced the offset clash contact. Discovered by Roger, this variety was documented by MadDieClashes. The 1982 Lincoln Cent is a transitional year notable for seven distinct varieties — combinations of large and small dates in both copper (95% copper, 5% zinc) and zinc (copper-plated zinc) compositions, struck at both Philadelphia and Denver. This large date copper variant represents one of those specific combinations. Atypical die clashes differ from standard clashes because the dies contact each other at an offset angle, producing transferred design elements in unexpected positions across the coin's surface.
