1982-D Variety WMDO-001
ErrorDescription
Carrying the Wexler Variety ID 1982-D 25c WMDO-001, this Denver Mint Washington Quarter shares the same master die doubling obverse affecting all 1982 quarters regardless of facility. The doubling originated during the master die hubbing process in Philadelphia, where the master die received a misaligned secondary hub impression that imparted extra thickness to IN GOD WE TRUST and subtle reinforcement of the date. Every working die produced from this compromised master die inherited the doubling, making WMDO-001 present across the full 1982-P, 1982-D, and 1982-S production run. Denver specimens may be distinguished from Philadelphia counterparts by the D mintmark and by working die markers specific to individual Denver dies, though the underlying doubling is identical. The spread toward center produces a thickened appearance on affected elements rather than the separated secondary image typical of a working die doubled die. Master die varieties occupy a special place in numismatic classification because they demonstrate that an error at the earliest stage of die production cascades through the entire manufacturing chain, affecting millions of coins across multiple facilities.
Attribution History
- Discovered by John A. Wexler Cross References: None known Comments: Since the doubling is on the master die all 1982-P, 1982-D, and 1982-S Washington quarters will have this doubling. Apparent differences from coin to coin may result due to working hub wear, working die wear, and wear to the coins.
