1981 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Exhibiting Class II distorted hub doubling on the reverse, the 1981 Philadelphia Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001 shows a spread towards the center affecting multiple design elements: ONE CENT, the designer's initials FG (for Frank Gasparro), UNITED, and AMERICA all display the characteristic inward-directed separation of Class II doubling. The breadth of affected elements — spanning from the central denomination inscription to the peripheral legends and the designer's initials — indicates that the hub misalignment affected a substantial portion of the reverse working die during the hubbing process. For authentication, the obverse provides the primary die marker: short die scratches run northeast from the top of the Y in LIBERTY. The reverse itself shows no significant additional die markers beyond the doubling, which means that attribution relies primarily on the doubling characteristics combined with the obverse die scratch confirmation.
