Sixteenth in the Cuds on Coins census for the 1980 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cent, CU-1C-1980-16 adds to a die failure record that few modern cent dates can rival. The continued discovery of new cud varieties decades after these coins entered circulation speaks to the perseverance of error coin hunters who systematically examine rolls, bags, and individual coins searching for undocumented die breaks. Each confirmed addition must survive scrutiny against every existing entry — the submitter and the cataloging team compare break position, angular span, proximity to specific design features, and any associated die cracks that may serve as secondary identifiers. CU-1C-1980-16 satisfied all of these criteria as a previously unrecorded die. The coin itself was struck at the Philadelphia Mint from the standard 95% copper composition and carries the P mintmark that appeared on the cent denomination for the first time in 1980.
