Description

DELISTED AS A REPUNCHED MINTMARK. The 1980-D 1¢ WRPM-009 was originally cataloged as a purported D/D Southeast variety, but subsequent examination determined that the apparent secondary mintmark impression was in fact a well-placed die gouge with a concurrent divot to the east where the gouge material arose — not a genuine repunching of the mintmark. The listing is retained in the Wexler files for informational purposes only, serving as a reference to prevent future resubmission of the same die as a new discovery. Despite its delisted status, the die markers recorded during the original attribution remain useful for identification: the obverse shows a die crack above VDB, with faint die scratches running north-northeast above TY and below E in LIBERTY. The reverse displays die cracks on columns 1, 2, 9, 10, 11, and 12, cracks on both the right and left rooftop of the Lincoln Memorial, and a die gouge left of O in ONE near the rim. The delisting of WRPM-009 is part of a broader pattern within the 1980-D RPM census, where a significant number of originally reported varieties were later found to be die gouges, die damage, or duplicates of other listings — a correction process that ultimately led to the comprehensive renumbering that affected designations throughout the series. The distinction between a repunched mintmark and a strategically positioned die gouge can be exceedingly subtle, particularly when the gouge coincidentally mimics the contour of a secondary D impression. This variety carries no valid cross-references. Attribution review by the Wexler Team; Wexler Variety ID: 1980-D 1¢ WRPM-009.
