Description

Like its near-twin WRPM-004, the current 1980-D 1¢ WRPM-006 is a replacement listing that fills a catalog slot left vacant by an earlier consolidation in the Wexler files. The original WRPM-006 was determined to be a duplicate of WRPM-008, and because the large number of delisted dies for the 1980-D date had created significant numbering gaps, both WRPM-006 and WRPM-008 were consolidated and relisted as WRPM-001. The die now occupying the WRPM-006 designation was formerly cataloged as WRPM-010 before being reassigned during this renumbering effort. The Wexler Team notes that this replacement die is essentially identical to the WRPM-004 replacement die in both mintmark position and the apparent character of the doubling, raising the possibility that marker overlap between the two could complicate attribution. Whether an intervening die state separates them or they represent genuinely distinct dies with coincidentally similar repunching characteristics remains an open question in the attribution literature. This ambiguity highlights one of the persistent challenges in RPM cataloging: when the Denver Mint used dozens of working dies for a single date, the probability of two dies receiving nearly identical mintmark punching errors increases substantially. Collectors should pay close attention to secondary die markers — scratches, gouges, and crack patterns unrelated to the mintmark itself — when attempting to distinguish WRPM-006 from WRPM-004. The 1980-D cent was struck from the standard 95% copper alloy at the Denver Mint. No additional cross-references are known. Attribution by the Wexler Team; Wexler Variety ID: 1980-D 1¢ WRPM-006.

  • Discovered by Brian Allen Cross References: None known Comments: The original WRPM-006 was found to be a duplicate of WRPM-008. Due to the large number of dies that were delisted for the year, both WRPM-006 and WRPM-008 have been relisted as WRPM-001. This below die is a replacement for the WRPM-006 listing, and was formerly listed as WRPM-010. Additionally, this die is essentially identical to that of the WRPM-004 replacement die in position and seemingly character of doubling. Possible markers overlap between these two dies, though an intervening die
