CU-25c-1979D-02 Rim Cud
Error
Description
Documented by Cuds on Coins (recorded July 22, 2018), the CU-25c-1979D-02 is a rim cud variety on the 1979 Denver Washington Quarter. A rim cud occurs when a section of the die near the edge fractures completely and breaks away, leaving a void that fills with metal during striking and produces a raised, featureless blob at the periphery of the coin. Unlike interior die breaks that leave raised areas surrounded by normal design, rim cuds extend to the coin's edge and typically obliterate whatever design elements — lettering, stars, or denomination — occupied that section of the die rim. The 1979-D Washington Quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition (copper-nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core) weighing 5.67 grams at 24.3 mm diameter with a reeded edge. John Flanagan's Washington Quarter design, in continuous production since 1932, positions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the date around the obverse periphery, while UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and QUARTER DOLLAR encircle the reverse — all text vulnerable to obliteration by rim cuds at their respective clock positions. The Washington Clad and Silver Proof Quarters series spans 1965 to 1998, covering the transition from silver to clad composition mandated by the Coinage Act of 1965. Rim cuds on clad quarters are collected by size, position, and the specific design elements they affect, with larger cuds generally commanding greater collector interest.
