Description

Sixth documented cud on the 1979 Denver Mint Susan B. Anthony Dollar, CU-100c-1979D-06 preserves a major die break at the rim where a fragment of the die separated completely, creating the characteristic raised featureless blob at the coin's edge. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar, introduced in 1979 as the first small-size dollar coin, was designed by Frank Gasparro with a portrait of the women's suffrage pioneer on the obverse and an adaptation of the Apollo 11 mission insignia on the reverse. Denver struck 288,015,744 SBA Dollars in the inaugural 1979 production year, an enormous output driven by optimistic expectations for public acceptance that would ultimately prove premature — the coin's similarity in size to the quarter led to widespread confusion and resistance. With no additional cross-references beyond its Cuds on Coins primary designation, CU-100c-1979D-06 is cataloged within the systematic framework that documents cuds by denomination (100c = dollar), date, mintmark, and sequential number. The high 1979-D mintage combined with the coin's unpopularity meant many SBA Dollars were returned to the Federal Reserve or stored in vaults, potentially concentrating specimens of die break varieties within specific bag lots and making population estimates difficult for variety researchers.
