1978-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 1978-D 1¢ WRPM-001, this repunched mintmark variety exhibits a D/D Tilted (Rotated) orientation — meaning the initial mintmark punch was applied at an angle different from its intended position before a corrective second impression established the final placement. This variety carries an unusually rich set of die markers documented through two independent submissions. Daniel Griffin's submission identifies obverse diagnostics including two very weak WNW/ESE die scratches between the 1 in the date and the bowtie, a die gouge near the rim at approximately 2:30 level with the nose tip, a small die gouge right of the E in WE, a small die gouge at the bottom of the first T in TRUST, two small die gouges to the right of the bottom of the U in TRUST, a small die gouge near the rim below the B in VDB, and a NW/SE die scratch above the eye. On the reverse, Griffin documented a weak die clash remnant in the third and fourth Memorial bays, old NW/SE die scratches throughout most of the reverse surface, and a large die gouge northeast of the designer's initials FG. Brian Allen's subsequent submission added further diagnostics: obverse die scratches running SSW from TY in LIBERTY, and reverse die scratches running WNW/ESE through and under E PLURIBUS UNUM as well as above ONE and through the C in CENT. Allen's cross-references place this variety as CONECA RPM #1 and Coppercoins 1978D-1MM-001, and the listing also references the related 1978-D 1¢ WRPM-002. The combination of a tilted repunched mintmark with extensive die markers on both sides makes WRPM-001 one of the more thoroughly documented RPM varieties for the 1978-D date.
