Advancing to die stage B, CU-5c-1978D-01B captures the next phase of deterioration on the same die that produced CU-5c-1978D-01A on a 1978 Denver Mint Jefferson Nickel. Cross-referenced as JNC-78D-2B in the Jefferson Nickel Cud census, this stage shows a more developed rim cud than its A-stage predecessor, reflecting the expansion of the fracture under continued striking. Between stages A and B, the separated rim section and the void it created have been subjected to thousands of additional strikes, and the cud area typically grows as surrounding die metal weakens and additional fragments may separate.
