Description

Representing the final year of Eisenhower Dollar production, this 1977-S Proof doubled die reverse combines Class II doubling toward the rim with evidence of a master die doubled reverse, making it a compound variety of particular research interest. The WDDR-001 designation as the first cataloged DDR for this date underscores its significance. Class II doubling shows on the top bars of DO of DOLLAR, the lower right serif of LL, and the middle bar of AR, while the A of DOLLAR also shows both lower serifs splitting. The variety also shows MDDR characteristics, indicating the doubling originated at the master die level rather than the working die stage. The obverse is cataloged as WDDO-010, establishing a die marriage giving collectors two attributable varieties on one coin. A Type 1 S mintmark with heavy clockwise tilt appears on the obverse. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1977-S $1 Pr WDDR-001, a faint die scratch in the field halfway up between the DO of DOLLAR serves as a reverse die marker.
