Description

Ninth in the sequence of documented rim breaks on 1977 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial cents, CU-1C-1977-09 extends the cud census cataloged by Cuds on Coins. Every cud tells a story of mechanical failure — a working die, subjected to the immense pressures of the coining press, develops a fatigue crack at its periphery that eventually isolates a fragment of rim steel. Once the fragment separates, the die's effective striking surface is permanently altered: where the rim once existed, there is now a void that fills with planchet metal on each strike, producing the characteristic raised blob. The 1977 Philadelphia cent is an ideal candidate for cud hunting because its enormous mintage of approximately 4.47 billion pieces virtually guarantees that a significant number of dies were run to failure. Fifteen confirmed cuds represent fifteen individual dies that reached terminal condition, and the actual number of failures during the production run was almost certainly higher — some cuds may not have survived in identifiable condition, and others may await discovery.
